I had the privilege to earn a BA in History from the UW, taking many classes with my mentor, William Appleman Williams, and graduating in 1958. This enabled me to do some overseas teaching for the University of Maryland at air bases in France and England. Then I went on to get an MA in Chinese History and Politics from Stanford, and a Ph.D. in International Relations from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, where I specialized in Chinese politics and economics.
This training, in turn, led to a position in the US Department of State, working first on North Vietnam and then on China.
What I didn't know until I got there was that I didn't want to do research 90% of my day, even fascinating research. So after 5 years I left and eventually found positions working with people and using managerial skills. I headed the Health Care Campaign and later Connections for Independent Living for AARP (then the American Association of Retired Persons). After 24 really interesting years I went back to school and obtained an MA in Counseling at The George Washington University. For the last 8 years, I have had my own private practice counseling adults on career issues: HerzogCareerConsulting.com.
My studies with Drs. Williams and George Mosse were highlights of my academic life, and I wish all history majors the same good fortune.
