Graduate Councils and Committees:

The Graduate Council has overall responsibility for the graduate program and curriculum. It considers a range of issues from program policies and admissions to student petitions. The Graduate Council is chaired by the Director of Graduate Studies and is composed of six professors appointed by the Department Chair, three elected graduate student representatives, and the Graduate Program Advisor, James Schlender, Jr.

Graduate Council Meeting Minutes and Agendas

Five other committees, three of which also have graduate student members, have special duties relating to the graduate program:

The Fellowships and Scholarships Committee (F&S Committee) is a subcommittee of the Graduate Council and is chaired by the Director of Graduate Studies. It has principal responsibility for awarding fellowships and prizes. It is composed of three faculty from the Graduate Council, together with the Graduate Funding Coordinator.

The Joint Committee on Teaching Assistants (JCOTA) supervises the hiring, training, and ongoing professional development, evaluation of teaching assistants and hears concerns arising from the appointment or supervision of teaching assistants. Its membership consists of two faculty members from the Undergraduate Council, two faculty from the Graduate Council (one of whom serves as chair), three graduate student representatives (elected by the currently-enrolled students to two-year terms), and the Graduate Program Advisor.

The Faculty/Graduate Student Liaison Committee organizes advisory committees of graduatestudents to participate in faculty searches. It is composed of three graduate students who are elected annually by the currently-enrolled graduate students.

The Joint Committee on Diversity is charged with making policy recommendations to the department as a whole regarding recruitment and retention of students and faculty of color, and with working with the Graduate Council in the recruitment and retention of students of color and with the Faculty Council in the recruitment and retention of faculty of color. The council also works to integrate diversity into the Department curriculum at all levels. Three graduate students, appointed by the Department Chair, serve for a one-term on this committee.

The Funding Committee is a subcommittee of the Graduate Council. Its membership consists of two faculty members from the Graduate Council (one of whom serves as chair), two graduate student representatives (one elected by the currently-enrolled students and one appointed from the Graduate Council), and two staff members (the Graduate Program Advisor and the Graduate Funding Coordinator). The charge of the committee is to investigate a host of issues related to improving funding for history graduate students.
